Have a Heart and Swim from the Heart!

Join hundreds of swimmers from around the world on Friday, May 27, 2016, by participating in the first international Swim from the Heart meet in Haifa, Israel.  Swim from the Heart will raise awareness and critical research funds to predict and prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD) in children and adults–the number one natural cause of death in the United States and worldwide.

Inspired by open-water swimmers in Northern California, participants are asked to give of their strength, passion and resources to swim in one of four heats (ranging from 1 km to 7.6 km) in the Haifa Bay—all in support of SCD research at Rambam.

For our friends traveling from abroad, you can expect a travel itinerary filled with additional unique swim opportunities to the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Tel Aviv. Hotel accommodations, scenic touring and group meals will be arranged based on participant interest. Email Inbar Shahaf at [email protected] as soon as possible for more information and pricing.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) patients exhibit no warning symptoms until the fatal incident, making prevention difficult. In the young, SCD is usually due to inherited genetic disorders that may result in the death of otherwise healthy individuals. Particularly tragic is the sudden death of a young athlete with no previous exhibited physical problems. Clearly new approaches are needed to enable early detection, prevention, and management to assure a promising future for people at risk for SCD.

Rambam Health Care Campus is the largest and most active academic medical center in Northern Israel, serving more than two million residents. Rambam is located in beautiful Haifa, Israel, a city known for coexistence, research and medical device development. The synergy created in Rambam’s cooperative ventures in science and technology with the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and high-tech industry is a unique asset not shared by any other hospital in the world.

The Bench-to-Bedside Center for Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death at Rambam will initiate multi-disciplinary and collaborative SCD research between Rambam experts, Technion researchers, and medical industry. This cutting-edge research will contribute to the development and implementation of new preventive and therapeutic strategies to detect and manage SCD in the young, whoever and wherever they may live.
